2006 Easter Explorer & Network Camp
Welcome to our little gallery on this year's Easter camp.
The camp was held at the Brighton district scout campsite, Parkwood (near Poyning) between
the 3rd and 7th April.
Offsite activities were climbing, swimming & a trip to Thorpe Park.
Whilst onsite, we all had a very relaxed attitude and as with all of our
Camps, had lots of large fires to sit around whilst chatting and playing
card games.
It would also appear that we are starting to build a reputation for
eating up the site wood pile on our camps ^_^
Not all the pictures are in strict chronological order but I have tried
to put them in an order that makes sense (that and one large fire in the
dark looks a lot like another large fire in the dark)
If you wish to view a larger version of any of the pictures, the
pictures can be clicked on for the original 1600x1200 JPG from my Nokia
N70's built in camera.

The site wood pile before we attacked it. See the picture at
the bottom of this page for the comparison for when we left! |
|
With quite a lot rain in the week prior to the camp, the
water table would appear to be quite high in the Parkwood
area...
As soon as the trench pit was dug for the fire, it filled with
water and for the first day was just the 'camp pond' |
|
Here is a selection of the 'camp gadgets' that were
constructed:
- A shelter from a large tarpaulin
- A bin bag holder
- A table from pallet wood |
|
And finally a utensil holder for the camp kitchen area |
|
Since the trench pit was a pond at this stage of the camp,
we had to use the altar fire |
|
We do enjoy our fires in the evening
I apologise for the strange effects around these two photos - I
later realised it to be the flash going off and reflecting back
on the phone's case |
|
|
|
Well you didn't expect us to have a small fire did you?
We managed to forget to remove the dixey's support log across the top
of the kitchen area before building the fire up (see the kitchen
utensil holder picture, with the dixey in use if you don't know
what I mean)
Plenty of logs laying around to replace it with though |
|
Although not visible (in the picture, due to the light
levels), the canopy level of the wood is much lower here than
above the trench fire, so we could not build the fire up any
larger |
|
Can you feel the heat |
|
Richard fails to get his trolley steering badge... |
|
Time to dry out the camp pond |
|
Not so sure about drying the pond out,
rather filling it with hot embers |

This is how we cook!

To quote Futurama:
Leela: Ow, fire hot!
Professor: The professy will help
Professor: *Puts hand into fire*
Professor: Fire indeed hot
This was a common quote in the camp, whenever anyone would
complain of the fire being too hot!
Time to move the seats further back... |
|
|
|
Oh dear, we've run out of pallets now!
Time to move closer to the fire... |
|
|
|
And finally, the comparison shot of the wood pile after our
presence - time for them to re-stock soon! |
That's the end of the pictures I'm afraid, although there is a short
movie available which I shot, in mp4 format, of the fire. I apologise in advance for
the poor quality... its the best my phone can manage.
If you cannot play MP4s, try
using google!
